March First Fridays: Dance Downtown

About March First Fridays

Put on your dancing shoes and head to downtown South Bend for the March First Fridays, where the theme will be “Dance Downtown.” Various local dance groups of many styles will be located in several First Fridays businesses, where they be giving lessons and performances. 

Plus, as always, enjoy live music, art exhibits, dining specials, and much more. Check out all the details below!

 

Free Parking

Parking (on-street and in DTSB-managed garages) is always free in downtown South Bend nights and weekends. For full details on downtown parking options, click here.

As always, Transpo will be offering FREE shuttle rides on one of their new CNG buses from 5:00 to 9:00 pm. Click here for a map of the shuttle route. Transpo shuttle service will pass each stop approximately every 15 minutes.

The shuttle service now has First Fridays Tour Guides! They will tell you all about the different activities and promotions that are taking place downtown at First Fridays, as well give general info about the downtown businesses, mixed with historical tidbits and fun facts. Tiki Bar Takeover at Vegetable Buddies

Join the adventurous Tiki culture of the South Pacific via South Bend for one night at Vegetable Buddies! Wear your exotic clothes (and get a lei), grab a parasoled drink and hula for a lot of fun. Artist Reception at South Bend Museum of Art

The South Bend Museum of Art will be holding an artist reception for their new exhibit “Neighborhood Gardens” by artist Lisa Marie Barber. She will be giving an artist talk at 6:15 p.m. Enjoy complimentary refreshments, free admission, and 10% off purchases in SBMA gift shop – The Dot Shop.

Pop-up Dance Party at Notre Dame Federal Credit Union

Notre Dame Federal Credit Union will be hosting a pop-up dance party outside their downtown branch with a DJ and tent. Come by and show off your moves!

Dance Film Event at the LaSalle Body Shop

8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Holding Space is a dance film event presented by Fischer Dance, directed by Hannah Fischer. Holding Space is a body of artistic work filmed in and around South Bend, highlighting company dancers alongside a community cast who perform in 3 of the 9 pieces. Audience members will see more than 30 community members appear in the films.

Holding Space explores intimacy and the texture of space between individuals. The viewer is both examined and examiner. Each piece deals with seeing and being seen in a new way, seeing each other and our city of South Bend in a new light. The artistic team will be available for discussing the work throughout each evening, and a cash bar will be available. Cocktail attire requested. Tickets are $15/$20 and can be purchased online by clicking here.

Laura Whidden at South Bend Chocolate Cafe

Laura Whidden will be performing a free concert at the South Bend Chocolate Cafe from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Laura will be performing pop/rock selections mixed with her own song creations. Also take advantage of their First Fridays special: 2 for $17 any crunch/pretzel combo.

Don Savoie and Beauty & The Beast Characters at Chicory Cafe

Costumed cast members of the United Youth Theatre‘s upcoming production of “Beauty and the Beast” will be at Chicory Cafe from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for a meet and greet and pictures. They will also be doing a bookmark craft for children and will be teaching some dance moves (6:30 p.m. to 6:50 p.m.), as well as selling tickets.
Also enjoy free live music by Don Savoie (8:00 p.m to 11:00 p.m.), dance lessons and performances by Spraoi agus Rince School of Irish Dance (5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.) and Sisters of the Nile & Company (7:00 p.m to 7:45 p.m.) and take advantage of the Chicory First Fridays specials: $1.50 one scoop gelato, and 16 oz. Opening Reception at Fire Arts

Fire Arts Inc. invites the public to an exhibit of Art Dolls by sculptor Rhonda Whitledge. “Wandering the Periphery” will be open from March 2 to April 27, with an opening reception this First Fridays from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Tours of the Historic Hoffman Hotel

The Hoffman Hotel will offer free tours of their renovated historic apartment spaces and free refreshments. The tours will be given every half hour (5:00, 5:30, 6:00, etc.)

Hops with History at Tippecanoe Place

Tippecanoe Place is introducing a new craft beer tasting event series- Hops with History – featuring local breweries with craft beer inspired appetizers. These will take place the first Friday and Saturday of the month, February through May. Each event in the series will have a presentation of craft beer by a featured brewery (March is Greenbush Brewing Co.), appetizers, four tastings and a full pint of beer of your favorite selection. They will also be providing guided tours of the mansion and answering any questions of their historic landmark throughout the evening. Also, take advantage of their First Fridays special of 1/2 price appetizers In the Studebaker Lounge.

Spraoi agus Rince School of Irish Dance is the only certified Irish Dance teacher and school based in Northern Indiana. They will be at Chicory Cafe, hosting an open Ceili (group dancing) that creates interaction for the attendees.

Uzima at The Pigeon & The Hen Pottery

Uzima is a local Afro-Caribbean Dance Troupe that brings people of all ages and backgrounds together to celebrate wholeness, health and life through drum and dance. They will be giving a performance and teaching a combination at The Pigeon & The Hen Pottery.

Folk and Contra Dancing at The Music Village

South Bend Folk Dancers and South Bend Contra Dancers will be at The Music Village teaching each group dance before it is performed throughout the evening.

United Youth Theatre at Chicory Cafe

The Sisters of the Nile & Company is the premiere Middle Eastern Dance Troupe in South Bend. They will be at Chicory Cafe, performing and teaching dances ranging from traditional Egyptian, to Cabaret, to Tribal Fusion.

Latin Dancing at WXYZ Bar

South Bend Latin Dance – the same group that you see in Studebaker Plaza during the summer First Fridays – have moved to their new indoor First Fridays location at the WXYZ Bar in the new Aloft Hotel. This geat new South Bend venue offers a beautiful welcoming environment, full bar, food options, and more. Dance to salsa, bachata, merengue and all the usual groove-gettin’ Latin jams. All ages, $5 cover, everyone welcome. Lesson at 8 p.m. followed by open dancing.
