About June First Fridays

Downtown South Bend will be in partnership with Best. Week. Ever. again for June’s First Fridays: Kid’s Night Out. Downtown will be bursting with activities for kids of all ages, including horse-drawn wagon rides, ROC Ur Body Family Fun FestMeet Me on the IslandRiverlights Music Festival, face painters, Trivia Trolley, balloon art, roving mascots, FREE East Race Rafting, and the Best Fireworks Show Ever.

Most events are free. Free parking and free Transpo shuttle rides are also available. Check out all the details below!

Free Parking

Parking (on-street and in DTSB-managed garages) is always free in downtown South Bend nights and weekends. Due to this being the busiest First Fridays of the year, additional parking with shuttle service has been created at St. Joe High School. For full details on downtown parking options, click here

 

First Fridays Road Closures

  • Jefferson Bridge will be closed starting at 11 a.m. Friday for fireworks setup, and will reopen later much after midnight, once everything is cleaned up. 
  • Colfax Bridge will be closed starting at 8 p.m. to set up a viewing area for the fireworks show, and that will reopen after the bleachers are cleared from there, probably around midnight.
  • Niles Avenue will be closed on the block between Jefferson and Washington all day Friday and Saturday for the Riverlights Music Festival.
  • Washington Street will be closed Friday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. for a Touch-a-Truck event.

Free Transpo Shuttle – back with “Trivia Trolley”

Transpo will be offering FREE shuttle rides on one of their new CNG buses from 5:00 to 10:30 pm. Click here for a map of the shuttle route. Transpo shuttle service will pass each stop approximately every 15 minutes. 

The popular “Trivia Trolley” will be making its return to this First Fridays, where our normal First Fridays Transpo shuttle is turned into our very own local version of Cash Cab. Take a ride on the shuttle and answer trivia questions for the chance to win fun prizes!

The shuttle service also has First Fridays Tour Guides. They will tell you all about the different activities and promotions that are taking place downtown at First Fridays, as well give general info about the downtown businesses, mixed with historical tidbits and fun facts. Grab a seat on the new First Fridays Transpo Tour, and enjoy the informative ride!

Kennedy’s Kitchen at Fridays by the Fountain

Kennedy’s Kitchen is headlining the first Fridays by the Fountain of the summer. The Morris Performing Arts Center presents Fridays by the Fountain on the Jon R. Hunt Plaza, in front of the Morris Theater, from June to August. A free outdoor lunchtime concert series, Fridays by the Fountain is a summertime tradition in downtown South Bend. Food vendors are available and they offer a variety of lunchtime favorites including pizza, sandwiches, salads, and smoothies.  You may choose to bring your own lunch. Tables are set in and around the plaza to give concertgoers a space to eat – or bring a blanket and relax on the lawn.  
 

Downtown South Bend Architectural Walking Tour

Enjoy a fun and informative guided walking tour of South Bend landmark buildings, exploring their history and present day use. Tours are given by the Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend & St. Joseph County. Cost for these 90-minute tours are just $4/person (cash only.) Space is limited so reservations are recommended- reserve your spot here. NOTE: The June 1 Tour is fully booked, but there is still space on the remaining 2018 tours.

Meet Me on the Island at the Century Center

Kick off your summer with art, music, refreshments, and mingling on the Island! The South Bend Museum of Art presents Meet Me on the Island featuring art on the island and music by The Whistle Pigs. Architectural Scavenger Hunt

Participate in an architectural scavenger hunt and learn more about the second annual Treasure Hunt North event coming up on July 21.  Treasure Hunt North will a one-day event, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., along historic West Washington Street on the western edge of downtown South Bend, with antique vendors on two corner grass lots at the intersection of West Washington Street and LaPorte Avenue, and on the grounds of Indiana Landmarks’ Kizer House, where a limited number of indoor booths also will be available.  The outdoor event – free and open to the public – features antique, collectible and architectural salvage dealers, artists, live music, food vendors, and family friendly activities throughout the historic West Washington Street neighborhood. Click here for more information.

The Vessel Show at Fire Arts

Fire Arts Inc. is excited to invite the public to view this year’s annual juried show, The Vessel.  This show features three dimensional work in clay, stone, metal, and mixed media emphasizing the vessel. A total of 39 unique pieces created by 24 artists are represented. Their distinguished juror was Katharine Schmidt, recently retired art professor and chair of the Bethel College Art Department. The show will be open from June 1 – July 28, with an opening reception on June 1 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and an awards presentation taking place at 7:00 p.m. The public will also have the opportunity to cast their vote for best piece throughout the month of June, as there will be a “People’s Choice Award” presented the evening of the First Fridays in July.

An exhibit dedicated to Indiana’s automotive and racing heritage is coming to Best. Week. Ever. We’re proud to present History on Wheels, a 53-foot double-expandable semi-trailer and state-of-the-art traveling exhibit. The exhibit touches on the history of more than 100 Indiana automakers and manufacturers, such as Cord, Duesenberg and Studebaker. It also delves into the lives of Hoosier innovators and inventors, such as Carl Fisher, Elwood Haynes, and Ralph Teetor.

South Bend Cubs Game, with TMV Music on the Concourse

Vision Screenings with the SB Lions Club

Award-winning, local author AJ Sarell will be at Idle Hours Bookshop selling her kids books, coloring book, and adult poetry book. There will also be coloring and opportunities for photos. Sarell was at last year’s June First Fridays signing her first book: “Itty Bitty the Kitty” – a story about a very small kitty who learns that she is enough how she is and the world needs all kinds. She will be back this June First Fridays with  a new book and a new character to help kids through the challenges of maintaining good mental health. Sarrell also writes work for adults, including new age, feminist poetry to give words to the plethora of feelings we have as we grow in tumultuous times.
