February’s “Fire & Ice” themed First Fridays will have ice carvers – some featuring a fire element – and a special fireworks show that will include a choreographed River Lights presentation!

As always, Transpo will be offering FREE shuttle rides on one of their new CNG buses from 5:00 to 9:00 pm. Click here for a map of the shuttle route. Transpo shuttle service will pass each stop approximately every 15 minutes.

The shuttle service now has First Fridays Tour Guides! They will tell you all about the different activities and promotions that are taking place downtown at First Fridays, as well give general info about the downtown businesses, mixed with historical tidbits and fun facts. Meet Me in the Gallery

5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Come in from the cold and warm up inside the South Bend Museum of Art at Meet Me in the Gallery, featuring incredible art and live music from the Notre Dame Faculty Jazz Trio (w /Jim Catalano, Larry Dwyer, and Darrel Tidaback.) Be inspired by the Scholastic Art Awards Exhibition, showcasing the talent of the region’s award-winning middle and high school artists. $5 at the door; children 12 and under free. Members will receive tickets in the mail. Food concessions available and cash bar provided by the Century Center. Presented by SBMA and 88.1 WVPE Public Radio with support from Century Center.

 

Fireworks & Ice Carvings

5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
In keeping with the Fire & Ice theme of this month’s First Fridays, we will have four live ice carvings taking place by MICA (Michiana Ice Carvers Association), and a special fireworks presentation taking place at 9:00 p.m. The show will be launched from the former “On the River” site, in the sandy area just north of Seitz Park. The best places for viewing the show will be on the Colfax Bridge, in the Great Hall at the Century Center, and, weather permitting, on the Century Center Island. Click here for a map of viewing locations, and places to avoid for safety reasons.

Five live ice carvings will be taking place this First Fridays from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.: in front of South Bend Chocolate Cafe, beside LaSalle Grill, in front of Edible Arrangements, in Studebaker Plaza, and in Key Bank Plaza. Click here for a map of the ice carving locations. Latin Dance at WXYZ Bar 

8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

South Bend Latin Dance – the same group that you see in Studebaker Plaza during the summer First Fridays – have moved to their new indoor First Fridays location at the WXYZ Bar in the new Aloft Hotel. This geat new South Bend venue offers a beautiful welcoming environment, full bar, food options, and more. Dance to salsa, bachata, merengue and all the usual groove-gettin’ Latin jams. Look for a mid-evening performance by internationally renowned José Serrano and Mayah Sandock. All ages, $5 cover, everyone welcome. Lesson at 8 p.m. followed by open dancing; and head to Cinco 5 afterward to continue the party.

Laura Whidden will be performing a free concert at the South Bend Chocolate Cafe from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Also take advantage of their First Fridays special: 2 for $17 any crunch/pretzel combo.

 

Marco Villarreal at Vegetable Buddies

Guitarist Marco Villarreal is hosting a great night of music at Vegetable Buddies, with guitar virtuoso Fareed Haque. They’ll be playing tracks from Marco’s solo release Ethereal along with classic Fusion/Rock/Jazz tunes. Along with Buddy Pearson on bass and Robert Gates on drums this will surely be an event not to be missed. Doors open at 4:00 p.m. with a 9:00 p.m. showtime. Tickets are $10 general admission, $15 VIP.  Come early and enjoy a meal off their Winter Restaurant Week menu.

 

Tuck Langland Show at Fire Arts

Fire Arts Inc. invites the public to an exhibit by sculptor Tuck Langland – “Surprise! Abstract Art by Tuck Langland.”  This unique exhibit will include free-standing sculpture, pedestal sculptures and wall sculptures from Langland’s early prolific period in which he delved into pure abstraction during his years in England and Murray, Kentucky. The show will run through February 23.

Enjoy two free live shows at LaSalle Kitchen & Tavern this First Fridays. E-man will play from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and The Buddy System will play from 9:00 p.m. to midnight.

 

Tours of the Historic Hoffman Hotel

The Hoffman Hotel will offer free tours of their renovated historic apartment spaces and free refreshments. The tours will be given every half hour (5:00, 5:30, 6:00, etc.)

Restaurant Week offers diners the opportunity to experience the variety of cuisine downtown South Bend has to offer from Italian to fine dining, New Orleans inspired to Japanese flavors. The menus include breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner options. 18 Downtown South Bend restaurants will offer valued-priced menus at $11, $22, or $33 (view menus here.) Approximately 10% of the proceeds from each meal purchased will be donated directly to the Memorial Children’s Hospital.

Hops with History at Tippecanoe Place

Tippecanoe is introducing a new craft beer tasting event series- Hops with History – featuring local breweries with craft beer inspired appetizers. These will take place the first Friday and Saturday of the month, February through May. Each event in the series will have a presentation of craft beer by a featured brewery (February is Zorn Brewery), appetizers, four tastings and a full pint of beer of your favorite selection. They will also be providing guided tours of the mansion and answering any questions of their historic landmark throughout the evening.
