About August First Fridays

Downtown South Bend will be alive with art for the August First Fridays, which will serve as a sneak preview of Art Beat 2018! We will be showcasing some of the visual and performing artists who will be participating in this year’s Art Beat with Art Walk, live performances and the Free Art Friday scavenger hunt.

Also enjoy Tie-Dye Night at Purple Porch Co-op, the last Meet Me on the Island of this summer, another Chicory Cafe Shrimp Boil, and much more! Find out all the details below.

Free Parking

Parking (on-street and in DTSB-managed garages) is always free in downtown South Bend nights and weekends. For full details on downtown parking options, click here.

Free Transpo Shuttle

As always, Transpo will be offering FREE shuttle rides on one of their new CNG buses from 5:00 to 9:00 pm. Click here for a map of the shuttle route. Transpo shuttle service will pass each stop approximately every 15 minutes.

The shuttle service now has First Fridays Tour Guides! They will tell you all about the different activities and promotions that are taking place downtown at First Fridays, as well give general info about the downtown businesses, mixed with historical tidbits and fun facts. Grab a seat on the new First Fridays Transpo Tour, and enjoy the informative ride!

Entertainment & Activities

Tie-Dye Night at Purple Porch

5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
123 N. Hill St.

Purple Porch Co-op will be having an evening of Tie-Dye, Bike Repair, Discounted Draft Kombucha this First Fridays. Bring your own natural fiber (cotton, hemp, silk, etc.) shirt, towel, skirt, socks, etc. and they’ll help you tie-dye it. It’s important that you bring something made of natural fibers so the color sets.
$5-$10 suggested donation to go to Nick Snyder’s family. Nick was an employee at Purple Porch who recently passed away. Nick would often wear tie-dye to work so Purple Porch is honoring him and his family with this event. Please allow 40 minutes to get through the entire process. 20 of those minutes will be waiting for the shirts to reach the correct PH. During that time help yourself to our cafe offerings or grab a drink.
South Bend Cycles will be on site helping with bike repairs. Bring your bike along a get a tune-up (chain, gears, brakes, and if you bring your own tube they can help fix flats).

Downtown South Bend Architectural Walking Tour

5:30 pm to 7:00 p.m.
American Trust Company clock (corner of Washington and Michigan)

Enjoy a fun and informative guided walking tour of South Bend landmark buildings, exploring their history and present day use. Tours are given by the Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend & St. Joseph County. Cost for these 90-minute tours are just $4/person (cash only.) Space is limited so reservations are recommended. Reserve your spot online by clicking here, or by calling 574-282-1110. Tours meet at 5:30 p.m. at the American Trust Company clock, located at the corner of Washington and MIchigan, in front of Cafe Navarre.

Meet Me on the Island at the Century Center

The South Bend Museum of Art presents the last Meet Me on the Island of this summer, featuring art, dancing, food, drinks, and music by The LowLifes .Admission $5 (kids under 12 get in free.)

Ladies Paint Night at GALLERY 2910

Welcome to one of our newest First Fridays participants – GALLERY 2910! They will be having three events/promotions taking place this First Fridays.
Ladies Paint Night: paint your own masterpiece in this two hour, fun-filled journey of color. This painting is super easy and anybody can do it! Includes 16″x20″ canvas, paint and all materials. No experience necessary. Prior registration required. Online reservations can be made by clicking here.
Artists You Should Know: Jake Koeppel. Each month GALLERY 2910 features a different artist for your enjoyment with complementary light refreshments. The artists’ work is always for sale and artists are available for commissioned orders.
Energy Friday: Start off your month with their Energy Friday and align yourself with your greatest desires. This holistic art lab features a different modality each month. Practitioners will be available for mini sessions from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Pat Pritchard Exhibit at Fire Arts

Fire Arts, Inc. invites the public to an exhibit by artist Pat Pritchard. “Just for Fun” will be open from August 3 – August 25, with an opening reception this First Fridays. Pat loves to work with Prisma colored pencils. Each of her intricate drawings is carefully and meticulously done in her own unique way. Working with Prisma colors for over 50 years, she loves the way they blend with the capability to layer each different transparent layer. “It takes time, but it’s worth it! It makes a bad day good, and you don’t have to take it too seriously.”

Ginger and Her Baked Goods at Fridays by the Fountain

Ginger and Her Baked Goods will be the performing at the August 3 Fridays by the FountainThe Morris Performing Arts Center presents Fridays by the Fountain on the Jon R. Hunt Plaza, in front of the Morris Theater, from June to August. A free outdoor lunchtime concert series, Fridays by the Fountain is a summertime tradition in downtown South Bend. Bring your own lunch or purchase food from nearby food vendors or from one of the many downtown eateries.

Latin Dancing in Studebaker Plaza

South Bend Latin Dance will be hosting a Latin Social Dance in Studebaker Plaza. Beginner lesson is at 8:30 p.m., with open dancing to follow until 11:00 p.m. Enjoy salsa, bachata, merengue and more under the stars!  All ages. $5 cover.

Latin Dance Party at Cinco 5

Fillmore’s Ladder at Vegetable Buddies

Fillmore’s Ladder (Rootsdown) will be playing at Vegetable Buddies this First Fridays. Come out early for a great dinner and to make sure you get a good seat. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. with a 10:00 p.m. showtime. 21+, $10 cover.

Tours of the Historic Hoffman Hotel

The Hoffman Hotel will offer free tours of their renovated historic apartment spaces and free refreshments. The tours will be given every half hour (5:00, 5:30, 6:00, etc.)

Tour the Golden Roamer: Mobile Visitor Center

Studebaker Plaza

The Golden Roamer is a 24-foot recreational vehicle complete with brochures for visitors detailing the area’s offerings as well as satellite TV, and more. It will be parked by Studebaker Plaza this First Fridays and you are invited to go inside and explore for free.

Art Beat Preview

Art Beat 2018 is taking place August 18 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the August First Fridays provides you a sneak peek at what’s in store for this year’s event.

Art Walk

Art Walk

Art Walk transforms Downtown South Bend into a walking art gallery. Art Beat visual artists will be showcasing their work in downtown storefront windows, and Art Walkers will be able to enjoy local art while strolling through the downtown area. An Art Walk map listing artists and locations will be provided at various First Fridays sites, and a digital copy can found by clicking here. The Art Walk “gallery” will open for the August First Fridays and run through August 12.

Free Art Friday

Free Art Friday is a special scavenger hunt for hidden artwork. Clues will be posted on the DTSB Facebook page throughout the night for visitors to travel around downtown and find the hidden art, then post their treasures on social media.

Many of the talented performance artists who will be appearing at Art Beat this year will be playing at this First Fridays throughout downtown.
