About April First Fridays

You don’t have to take a trip out of town to have a good time for Spring Break. Head to downtown South Bend where we will have fun activities for kids of all ages. 

Stop by the DoubleTree atrium for some fun drop-in games, including potato sack races, giant Jenga, giant Connect 4, a giant parachute, and more. The South Bend Chocolate Cafe will have a face painter and balloon artist (small fee). Kids can also enjoy a book signing by a local children’s author at Idle Hours Bookshop.

Big kids can enjoy live music, art exhibits, dining specials, and much more. Check out all the details below!

Free Parking

Parking (on-street and in DTSB-managed garages) is always free in downtown South Bend nights and weekends. For this First Fridays, please note that the Main Street Garage will be charging event parking due to the Phantom of the Opera showing at the Morris Performing Arts Center. However the Leighton and Wayne Street Garages will still be free of charge.

As always, Transpo will be offering FREE shuttle rides on one of their new CNG buses from 5:00 to 9:00 pm. Click here for a map of the shuttle route. Transpo shuttle service will pass each stop approximately every 15 minutes.

The shuttle service now has First Fridays Tour Guides! They will tell you all about the different activities and promotions that are taking place downtown at First Fridays, as well give general info about the downtown businesses, mixed with historical tidbits and fun facts. Grab a seat on the new First Fridays Transpo Tour, and enjoy the informative ride!

Drop-in Games

Notre Dame Federal Credit Union will be offering popcorn, refreshments, and coloring pages during their normal branch hours this First Fridays.

Book Signing at Idle Hours Bookshop

Local author Erika Pullin-Costilla will be signing copies of her new children’s book “Benny and the Jett meet La Luna” at Idle Hours Bookshop. “Benny and the Jett meet La Luna” is a great story for children up to 7 years of age.

Five Year Birthday Party at The Pigeon & The Hen Pottery

The Pigeon & The Hen Pottery invites you to come join them in celebrating five years of being in business. They will have cake, fun, and prizes at the party, and any customer who brings in a can of La Croix (their favorite beverage) will receive a 10% discount.

Phantom of the Opera at the Morris

The Phantom of the Opera will be at the Morris Performing Arts Center this First Fridays, and will have additional performances Saturday (2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.) and Sunday (2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.)  The beloved story will be performed by a cast and orchestra of 52, making this Phantom one of the largest productions now on tour.

Exhibition Reception at South Bend Museum of Art

The South Bend Museum of Art will be holding a reception for their new exhibitition “Agentive Valley” by artists Katie Duffy and Eric Souther. They will participate in a gallery walk and talk, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Warner Gallery. Enjoy complimentary refreshments, free admission, and 10% off purchases in SBMA gift shop – The Dot Shop.

Latin Dance at WXYZ Bar

South Bend Latin Dance – the same group that you see in Studebaker Plaza during the summer First Fridays – have moved to their new indoor First Fridays location at the WXYZ Bar in the new Aloft Hotel. This geat new South Bend venue offers a beautiful welcoming environment, full bar, food options, and more. Dance to salsa, bachata, merengue and all the usual groove-gettin’ Latin jams. All ages, $5 cover, everyone welcome. Lesson at 8 p.m. followed by open dancing; and head to Cinco 5 afterward to continue the party!

Laura Whidden will be performing a free concert at the South Bend Chocolate Cafe from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Laura will be performing pop/rock selections mixed with her own song creations. Fun by the Yard will be at the Chocolate Cafe twisting balloons from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (small fee) and Michiana Facepaintingwill be there as well from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. (small fee.) Also take advantage of their First Fridays special: 2 for $17 any crunch/pretzel combo.

Kevin Scott Joiner and Beauty & The Beast Characters at Chicory Cafe

Costumed cast members of the United Youth Theatre‘s upcoming production of “Beauty and the Beast” will be at Chicory Cafe from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for a meet and greet and pictures. They will also be doing a bookmark craft for children and selling tickets. Also enjoy free live music by Kevin Scott Joiner (8:00 p.m to 11:00 p.m.) and take advantage of the Chicory First Fridays specials: $1.50 one scoop gelato, and 16 oz. Hurricanes for $6.00.

Dream Team Live at Vegetable Buddies

Sculpture Exhibit and Fable Reading at Fire Arts

Enjoy two events at Fire Arts this First Fridays. The exhibit of art dolls by sculptor Rhonda Whitledge “Wandering the Periphery” is still on display, and will be open until April 27. Additionally, Tuck Langland will be reading from his new book “50 Fables for Fun, Fantasy and Filosophy” beginning at 6:00 p.m. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at a special price of $10 (normal price is $15.)

Kennedy’s Kitchen at Fiddler’s Hearth

Tours of the Historic Hoffman Hotel

The Hoffman Hotel will offer free tours of their renovated historic apartment spaces and free refreshments. The tours will be given every half hour (5:00, 5:30, 6:00, etc.)

Tour the Golden Roamer: Mobile Visitor Center

Studebaker Plaza

The Golden Roamer is a 24-foot recreational vehicle complete with brochures for visitors detailing the area’s offerings as well as satellite TV, and more. It will be parked by Studebaker Plaza this First Fridays and you are invited to go inside and explore for free.
