November First Fridays: Taste of the Town

The November First Fridays theme is "Taste of the Town" and we will be celebrating the flavor and vibrancy of downtown South Bend's dining, shopping and entertainment. 

Enjoy a progressive dinner as you tour "Flavor Stops" located throughout downtown. Listen to free live music at Chicory CafeSouth Bend Chocolate CafeLaSalle Kitchen & Tavern, and Fiddler's Hearth. There will also be a Latin Dance Party at WXYZ Bar, free admission to the new exhibits at the South Bend Museum of Art, and much more. Children can participate in a coloring contest at South Bend Chocolate Cafe for a chance to help Santa light the downtown tree on December 1!

As always, Transpo will be offering FREE shuttle rides on one of their new CNG buses from 5:00 to 9:00 pm., and their new shuttle route includes the South Bend Museum of Art! Click here for a map of the new shuttle route. Transpo shuttle service will pass each stop approximately every 15 minutes. 

The shuttle service now has First Fridays Tour Guides! They will tell you all about the different activities and promotions that are taking place downtown at First Fridays, as well give general info about the downtown businesses, mixed with historical tidbits and fun facts. Latin Dance at WXYZ Bar

South Bend Latin Dance - the same group that you see in Studebaker Plaza during the summer First Fridays - have moved to their new indoor First Fridays location at the WXYZ Bar in the new Aloft Hotel. This geat new South Bend venue offers a beautiful welcoming environment, full bar, food options, and more. Dance to salsa, bachata, merengue and all the usual groove-gettin' Latin jams. All ages, $5 cover, everyone welcome. Lesson at 8 p.m. followed by open dancing; and head to Cinco 5 afterward to continue the party!

Guided Walking Tour of Historic West Washington District

We're switching up our normal historic walking tour that takes place during the summer First Fridays. This time we're touring the beautiful West Washington Street area, a National Register District showcasing an exemplary and eclectic blend of architectural styles and structures. Once home to influential citizens, titans of industry, civic leaders, and other prominent families; West Washington Street is now replete with businesses and residents that value and preserve the fine architectural legacy left in their care by those that preceded them.

Tours are given by the Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend & St. Joseph County. Cost for these 90-minute tours are just $2/person (cash only.) Reservations can be made by clicking here or by calling 574-282-1110. This tour will meet at 5:30 at the historic Ambassadors for Christ Church, 302 W. Washington St. (the southwest corner of Washington and Lafayette.)

Coloring Contest at South Bend Chocolate Cafe

The South Bend Chocolate Cafe will host a coloring contest in the Rockne Room form 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. All supplies will be provided. The entries will be displayed in the hallway throughout November for public voting, and the winner will get the chance to help Santa light the Christmas Tree at the Tree Lighting Ceremony on December 1. 

Double Songwriter Night at Chicory Cafe

Marty Miles & Doug Harsch are joining forces for a one-night acoustic affair at Chicory Cafe this First Fridays. You'll hear memorable melodies with savvy stanzas punctuated by humor, sagacity and pathos. Percussionist extraordinaire, Jim Catalano, will also be on hand. Also enjoy Chicory's fall drink menu,$1.50 one scoop gelato, and 16 oz. Hurricanes for $6.00. Chicory will also be a Flavor Stop, offering a $5 combo plate of jambalaya, mac 'n cheese, and a beignet.

Reception and Artist Talks at South Bend Museum of Art

Enjoy free admission, refreshments and artist talks at the The South Bend Museum of Art, where they will be hosting receptions for The Funnies, The Best American Comics, and On the Move: A Selection of Contemporary Animations. Contemporary cartoonist, John Porcellino, will speak beginning at 6:15 p.m. about the work in The Funnies and The Best American Comics, in which his own work is featured. Also, Eta Carinae will be the musical guest. 

Laura Whidden at South Bend Chocolate Cafe

Laura Whidden will be performing a free concert at the South Bend Chocolate Cafe from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Also check out their selection of fall and holiday drinks, and take advantage of their First Fridays special: 2 for $17 any crunch/pretzel combo. Also try their Flavor Stop offering of a $5 combo plate with open face pulled pork w/BBQ sauce on mini pretzel bun, butternut squash soup, and a pumpkin pretzel. Mobile Medical Unit at South Bend Chocolate Cafe

Saint Joseph Health System will be having the Mobile Medical Unit stationed outside the South Bend Chocolate Café November 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is open to the public and appointments are not needed but preffered to ensure that your wait time is shorter. The Mobile Medical Unit is the easiest way for women to obtain their yearly mammograms. The truck has the latest 3D tomosynthesis technology for imaging of the breast. These screenings will only take the patient 20 minutes once they enter the truck, to when they leave.

Please bring a valid ID and insurance card to see if you are eligible for the free mammogram. Most insurances are accepted. There are also grant dollars available for women that qualify. To make an appointment, or for any questions call (574) 335-4500.

TMV Fall Benefit Concert at South Bend Civic

The Music Village will be hosting their fall benefit concert at the South Bend Civic Theatre, to continue to raise funds for their relocation.
