July First Fridays: Around the World

Join us for the July 7 First Fridays where the theme will be "Around the World." We will be celebrating with Latin dancing, international cuisine, and more!

Summer Restaurant Week will still be going strong, and, because we're not too far away from the 4th of July, there will be a special fireworks presentation with the South Bend River Lights at dusk.

Transpo will be offering FREE shuttle rides on one of their new CNG buses from 5:00 to 9:00 pm., and just last month they launched  their new shuttle route, which includes the South Bend Museum of Art! Click here for a map of the new shuttle route. Transpo shuttle service will pass each stop approximately every 15 minutes. 

The shuttle service now has First Fridays Tour Guides! They will tell you all about the different activities and promotions that are taking place downtown at First Fridays, as well give general info about the downtown businesses, mixed with historical tidbits and fun facts. Grab a seat on the new First Fridays Transpo Tour, and enjoy the informative ride!

Latin Dancing in Studebaker Plaza

South Bend Latin Dance will be hosting a Latin Social Dance in Studebaker Plaza. Beginner lesson is at 8:30 p.m., with open dancing to follow until 11:00 p.m. Enjoy salsa, bachata, merengue and more under the stars!  Drinks available at the Whiskey Exchange adjacent. All ages. $5 cover.

Meet Me on the Island

Enjoy art, music, refreshments and mingling on the island! Featuring art on the island and music by Southside Denny Snyder & The Snyders. Admission $5 (kids under 12 get in free.) SBMA and WVPE members will receive tickets in the mail. A fireworks presentation with the South Bend River Lights will take place at dusk!  

Book Reading & Signing at Idle Hours

Idle Hours Bookshop will host a book reading and signing event this First Fridays with two authors. Kathy Smart (author of "Melvin") and Amy Moses (author of "The Littlest Heart") will both be there to celebrate their children's books with a meet and greet, and signing copies. It's a perfect way to get your kids excited about reading this summer!

Guided Walking Tour of Historic West Washington District - SOLD OUT

We're switching up our normal historic walking tour that takes place during the summer First Fridays. This time we're touring the beautiful West Washington Street area, a National Register District showcasing an exemplary and eclectic blend of architectural styles and structures. Once home to influential citizens, titans of industry, civic leaders, and other prominent families; West Washington Street is now replete with businesses and residents that value and preserve the fine architectural legacy left in their care by those that preceded them.

Tours are given by the Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend & St. Joseph County. Cost for these 90-minute tours are just $2/person (cash only.) Reservations can be made by clicking here or by calling 574-282-1110. This tour will meet at 5:30 at the historic Ambassadors for Christ Church, 302 W. Washington St. (the southwest corner of Washington and Lafayette.)

Board Games & Kombucha at Purple Porch

The Purple Porch Co-op is celebrating their one-year anniversary of carrying Presto Kombucha on tap! Presto will launch a new kombucha flavor this First Fridays for the occasion, and will be offering free samples of all of their products. They will also have 64oz growlers for the first time with screen printed art on them. Purple Porch will also be hosting their second board game night this First Fridays. The first one was lots of fun, so be sure to check it out!

Peace Corps Info Booth and Live Music at Chicory Cafe

Members of the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Northern Indiana will be at Chicory Cafe this First Fridays from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. to share stories and information about their service. Make a mini-flag or see if you can locate current PC countries on a map while learning about one of the United State's premiere international programs. Chicory will also be featuring free live music by Linsay & Russell John from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Plus, take advantage of their regular First Fridays promotion of $1.50 one scoop gelato, and 16 oz. Opening of "Wit, Whim and Whimsy" Exhibit at Fire Arts

Something "punny" is happening at Fire Arts this summer! Fire Arts Inc. invites the public to an unusual exhibit by stone artist Doug Barton. His exhibit "Wit, Whim and Whimsy," chock full of visual puns and artful figures of speech, will be opening this First Fridays and will run July 7 through August 11.

Summer Restaurant Week

June 26 - July 9

The July First Fridays will coincide with Summer Restaurant Week, which takes place June 26 through July 9. Restaurant Week offers diners the opportunity to experience the variety of cuisine downtown South Bend has to offer with value-priced menus at $11, $22, or $33 (view menus here.) Your taste buds can enjoy a trip "Around the World," with Italian, Mediterranean, Irish, Japanese, and many other dining options. Downtown South Bend restaurants have something for every palate. The menus include breakfast, lunch, and dinner options, and 17 restaurants are taking part.

Restaurant Week takes place twice a year - one in the summer, and one in the winter. Approximately 10% of the proceeds from each meal purchased will be donated directly to the Memorial Children’s Hospital. It’s a great way to experience downtown South Bend’s dynamic culture and exciting local food and drink, and support a great cause while you’re at it.

Dismas House is a nonprofit organization founded in 1974 to provide transitional housing and support services to men and women who have been recently released from incarceration. This gives residents a “second chance” and empowers them to develop their artisan and business skills for future employment. All of the profits from Dismas Designs are used to benefit Dismas House and its residents.

A fireworks presentation with the South Bend River Lights will take place at dusk (approximately 10:00 p.m.) this First Fridays, at the end of the Meet Me on the Island event. The best places to view the show are: Century Center Island (Meet Me on the Island), Pier Park, Seitz Park, and the Colfax Bridge sidewalk (Colfax Bridge will NOT be closed to traffic, so please remain on the sidewalk.) The fireworks launch site and fallout area will be on the sandy area by Stephenson Mills Apartments, where On the River used to take place.
