A new neighborhood is popping up in the heart of South Bend, and the city is celebrating new opportunities for families who will call the "East Bank Village" home.

The first of 43 single family homes is up, and it's already been sold.

Another 48 townhomes will go up in what will be called the "Village at Riverwalk."

That's along Notre Dame Avenue and St. Peter Street near Jefferson Boulevard.

The houses start around $350,000, and the town homes start around $250,000.

The underdeveloped area was once the site of the Transpo bus maintenance facility, but it's now another example of South Bend's growth.

“The end result is that we're now seeing for the first time in decades, a whole new neighborhood emerging right in the heart of our city,” said South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg. “That's incredibly special ad we think that's going to contribute to the growth of the city and it couldn't come at a better time.”

There are also plans for 42 apartment units to go up in the same neighborhood.
