The South Bend River Lights Installation is made up of five elements:

  • The Light Trio
  • The Light Forest
  • The Crescent Sculpture
  • “Keepers of the Fire” lighting
  • Jefferson Boulevard Bridge Lighting

Each element is explained in further detail below. The installation will be powered by hydroelectric power. It is engineered to harness the power of nature and to perpetuate the City’s ongoing green initiatives.

The Light Forest

The installation is comprised of five 24-inch square towers, each a unique color, of various heights and mounted on posts (tree trunks). They are illuminated by up- and downlights and have a spotlight on the top that contributes to the “Keepers of the Fire” di Suvero sculpture illumination. Playful in appearance, the installation is also interactive. The Light Forest interacts with the Light Trio on the west side of the river, and can interact with people by changing colors when approached and touched.

The Crescent

The cascades are brought to light by a three-legged structure that straddles the sidewalk on the north side of the installation site. The installation contains 18 lights which are directed at the cascades and the di Suvero Sculpture. In addition to lighting the cascades and the di Suvero sculpture, it contains responsive downlights which change according to the movement of pedestrians who walk beneath it.

The “Keepers of the Fire” di Suvero Sculpture Lighting

A total of eight uplights were installed on the island to provide additional lighting for the acclaimed 1980 sculpture by Mark di Suvero to celebrate the legacy of the Potawatomi Indians.

Complementary Jefferson Boulevard Bridge Lighting

Built in 1905, the Jefferson Boulevard Bridge is one of the oldest and most beautiful bridges in the South Bend metropolitan area. The graceful curves and architectural embellishments of this elegant old friend has been enhanced by lighting highlights which accentuate its handsome arches.

Light Trio

This installation is comprised of three 30-inch-square light towers, each with an identical brushed aluminum finish. They are illuminated by up- and downlights and have a spotlight on the top which contributes to the “Keepers of the Fire” illumination di Suvero sculpture illumination. The installation is also interactive, and responds to participants by changing colors when approached and touched.
