August First Fridays: Arts Alive

Downtown South Bend will be alive with art for the August First Fridays, which will serve as a sneak preview of Art Beat 2017! We will be showcasing some of the visual and performing artists who will be participating in this year’s Art Beat with Art Walk, live performances and the Free Art Friday scavenger hunt! 

In addition, visit artists from LOGAN at the South Bend Museum of Art, experience a fusion of music, fashion, and art at A.R. Drew Art, see a whimsical art show at Fire Arts, and listen to live music at South Bend Brew WerksChicory Cafe, South Bend Chocolate Cafe, Fiddler's Hearth, The General Deli & Cafe, LaSalle Kitchen & Tavern, and Vegetable Buddies.

Transpo will be offering FREE shuttle rides on one of their new CNG buses from 5:00 to 9:00 pm., and just last month they launched  their new shuttle route, which includes the South Bend Museum of Art! Click here for a map of the new shuttle route. Transpo shuttle service will pass each stop approximately every 15 minutes. 

The shuttle service now has First Fridays Tour Guides! They will tell you all about the different activities and promotions that are taking place downtown at First Fridays, as well give general info about the downtown businesses, mixed with historical tidbits and fun facts. Artist Reception for The Studios at LOGAN

The South Bend Museum of Art offers free admission on First Fridays, and this month, they invite you to visit with artists from LOGAN. The arts often reward the struggle with our physical limitations with an opportunity for expression and connection with others that goes beyond what we can say in more concrete ways. In this exhibit featuring artists from The Studios at LOGAN, we see another facet of this process by celebrating the work created by individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  Enjoy wine and refreshments while you visit with LOGAN Artists and tour their three current exhibitions, their Permanent Collection, and peruse the fine art for sale in the SBMA Dot Shop. UZIMA Dance Class

The Music Village and the St. Joseph County Public LIbrary Main Branch are partnering to bring you a free class by Uzima Dance this First Fridays. UZIMA is a fun and creative way to reduce stress, lose weight, boost energy levels, increase cardiovascular health, and rejuvenate the body, mind, and spirit. UZIMA combines the heartbeat of “live drumming” with African, Caribbean, and Brazilian dance creating an exhilarating experience of movement, friendship, and fitness. This free class will be held outside between the St. Joseph County Public Library and The Music Village weather permitting. Rain location will be inside TMV.

Balloon Twisting at Edible Arrangements

"Wit, Whim and Whimsy" Exhibit at Fire Arts

Something "punny" is happening at Fire Arts this summer! Fire Arts Inc. invites the public to an unusual exhibit by stone artist Doug Barton. His exhibit "Wit, Whim and Whimsy," chock full of visual puns and artful figures of speech, will run July 7 through August 11.

Marty Miles at Chicory Cafe

Chicory Cafe will be featuring free live music by Marty Miles from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., with special guests Jim Catalano on percussion and Bill Bosler on hammered dulcimer. Guided Walking Tour of Historic West Washington District

We're switching up our normal historic walking tour that takes place during the summer First Fridays. This time we're touring the beautiful West Washington Street area, a National Register District showcasing an exemplary and eclectic blend of architectural styles and structures. Once home to influential citizens, titans of industry, civic leaders, and other prominent families; West Washington Street is now replete with businesses and residents that value and preserve the fine architectural legacy left in their care by those that preceded them.

Tours are given by the Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend & St. Joseph County. Cost for these 90-minute tours are just $2/person (cash only.) Reservations can be made by clicking here or by calling 574-282-1110. This tour will meet at 5:30 at the historic Ambassadors for Christ Church, 302 W. Washington St. (the southwest corner of Washington and Lafayette.)

Eddie Turner & Trouble at Vegetable Buddies

Eddie "Devil Boy" Turner returns to tear the roof off Vegetable Buddies. A diverse blend of rock, voodoo blues and R&B peppered with African rhythms, Turner's music moves the feet while simultaneously haunting the soul. Come out early for a great dinner and to make sure you get a good seat. Historic Hoffman Hotel Tours

The Hoffman Hotel Apartments will offer free tours of their renovated historic apartment spaces, along with free refreshments. The tours will be given every half hour (5:00, 5:30, 6:00, etc.) They will also be featuring an art table this month, in conjunction with the theme of Arts Alive.

Tour the Golden Roamer: Mobile Visitor Center

4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The Golden Roamer is a 24-foot recreational vehicle complete with brochures for visitors detailing the area’s offerings as well as satellite TV, and more. It will be parked near the Gridiron this First Fridays - near the Chocolate Cafe - and you are invited to go inside and explore.

Art Beat Preview

Art Beat 2017 is taking place August 19 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the August First Fridays provides you a sneak peek at what's in store for this year's event. Click here for more info on Art Beat.

Art Walk

Art Walk transforms Downtown South Bend into a walking art gallery. Art Beat visual artists will be showcasing their work in downtown storefront windows, and Art Walkers will be able to enjoy local art while strolling through the downtown area. An Art Walk map listing artists and locations will be provided at various First Fridays sites, and you can click here for a digital copy. The Art Walk "gallery" will open for the August First Fridays and run through August 12.

Free Art Friday

Free Art Friday is a special scavenger hunt for hidden artwork. Clues will be posted on the DTSB Facebook page throughout the night for visitors to travel around downtown and find the hidden art, then post their treasures on social media.

Dismas House is a nonprofit organization founded in 1974 to provide transitional housing and support services to men and women who have been recently released from incarceration.
