Spend an Evening with Local Stars at Downtown South Bend's First Fridays on May 4

May 1, 2012 — The stars are shining bright in downtown! Come watch South Bend’s finest musicians and aspiring entertainers shine in downtown South Bend during First Fridays on May 4 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. South Bend Stars promises an evening filled with performances, special features and more.

Local talent will perform a variety of genres at various locations throughout downtown from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Main Street Coffee House, 102 N. Main Street, will host spoken word. The College Football Hall of Fame gridiron, 111 S. St. Joseph Street, will be rockin’ with the sounds of local bands. In the event of inclement weather, performances will move inside the College Football Hall of Fame. Across the river, at Ciao’s Italian Restaurant, 501 N. Niles Avenue, relax and unwind with acoustic performances. And everyone is invited to find their inner idol singing karaoke at Bruno’s Pizza, 131 S. Michigan Street.

Karaoke performers 21 and over can showcase their talent at the Studebaker Lounge inside Tippecanoe Place Restaurant, 320 W. Washington Street, from 5:00 until 9:00 p.m.

The Young Professionals Network will host an all genres performance at Club LaSalle, 115 W. Colfax Avenue, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Young professionals ages 21 to 39 are invited to enjoy great drink specials and networking while listening to fellow peers perform.

This month’s KeyBank Concert series features the country band Everyday People. Everything from original hits and current radio favorites to the great classics by pioneers of country music will be played by this band. This band is no stranger to the big stage either. Everyday People recently opened for country music legend Willie Nelson, adding to an already impressive list that includes Loretta Lynn, Randy Travis, Neal McCoy and Terri Clark. The free concert takes place at KeyBank Plaza from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held at CJ’s Pub, 236 S. Michigan Street. You must be 18 years of age or older to enter CJ’s Pub.

Influenced by Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Bob Marley and the Black Crowes, The Hollow Congregation and Friends featuring Michael C. Hancz will perform at Chicory Café, 105 E. Jefferson Boulevard, from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m.

Art galleries highlight star artists each month with artist receptions from 5:00 until 9:00 p.m. Artpost, 216 W. Madison Street, features two South Bend artists, Hendrika Akkerman and Hank Mascotte. CircaArts Gallery, 528 E. Colfax Avenue, will host an opening reception for watercolorist and South Bend native, Ann Jagla. At Fire Arts, 305 E. Colfax Avenue, ceramic artist Eric Kaufmann’s exhibit Broken, Healing, Whole opens. Take time to speak one-on-one with these artists.

Made in Michiana, 122 S. Michigan Street, returns as Michiana’s newest hot spot for fine and fun art. Stop by for the Grand Re-Opening Celebration to meet the famous shop dog, Petey, and rub elbows with all star artists and artisans.

Friend posts can be found from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Ciao’s Italian Restaurant, Coveleski Stadium, DoubleTree by Hilton, Main Street Coffee House, South Bend Chocolate Café, and the St. Joseph County Public Library Friends of the Library Book Sale building.

Free TRANSPO trolley rides will get you from the east to the west side of the river and back again. The trolley stops approximately every 20 minutes at eight marked locations.

First Fridays Downtown South Bend features over 40 participating businesses and takes place from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. on the first Friday of every month throughout the year. Participating businesses remain open or host special events such as live music, demonstrations, celebrations, receptions and special offerings. Most events are free or at a reduced rate. Upcoming First Fridays dates are June 1, July 6, August 3, September 7, October 5, November 2 and December 7, 2012.
